LETTER OF 1 PETER

BACKGROUND

The Letter of 1 Peter was evidently written by Peter in Rome using the code name Babylon used by the early church. The letter was written before the death of Peter sometime between 64-67 AD. At that time persecution of Christians under Nero was severe because the Emperor blamed the burning of Rome to Christians. The burning of Rome happened sometime in July 64 AD and went on for days because at that time there were no firefighting forces yet like what we have today in modern times.

Considering that Peter was unschooled and was a simple fisherman, the letter of Peter must have been written with the help of a scribe or secretary that was the practice in biblical times considering that only 10% of the population were literate to read or write. They depended on oral tradition to preach and teach. The presence of this Letter proved once and for all that Peter was in Rome. He lived, preached and taught in Rome and established the Church of Rome ahead of Paul. When Paul wrote the famous Letter to the Romans, he wrote to the church in Rome though he was never in Rome.

The use of code name for Rome which is Babylon was to hide the whereabouts of the leader of the Church, Peter who was wanted as he escaped from prison in Jerusalem with the help of an angel of God. After that he disappeared completely from the Acts in Chapter 12 except when he had to attend as leader of the church in the Council of Jerusalem.
